In 2013 as he was preparing to leave home and start University, 22-year-old Rob Camm’s life was changed forever when a car crash left him paralysed from the neck down and dependent on a ventilator. However, Rob was determined that his change of circumstances would not stop him doing all the things he loved as he grew up, one of which was enjoying an active outdoor lifestyle.
When he finally returned home following nine months in hospital Rob immediately began researching what types of powerchairs were available that would enable him to get back to what he loved and found All Terrain Wheelchairs, as he explains: “I knew that the powerchair I initially had would not be able to withstand the demands of going off road etc. and when I saw the Extreme X8 from All Terrain Wheelchairs I knew I had found the powerchair that would meet all my requirements”.
Rob has now had his Extreme X8 for over two years and would not be without it. “With the Extreme X8 I can walk the dogs, go to the beach and do many of the things I used to enjoy. Another huge benefit of the Extreme X8 is its ability to tackle kerbs without trouble, therefore eliminating the need to look for dropped kerbs which even in 2017 are not always easy to find” continued Rob.
Among his various achievements, Rob has completed two Tough Mudder events which he would not have been able to do without the support of the team at All Terrain Wheelchairs as they built a one-off trailer so he could carry extra batteries to allow him to complete the course.
As with every powerchair from All Terrain Wheelchairs, Rob’s Extreme X8 was custom built to meet his requirements as Director Richard Kusnierz explained: “Rob’s chair features a customised chin control system, arm pads which are mounted at a specific angle to suit Rob and a bespoke headrest. A rack was purpose built to carry his breathing apparatus on the rear of the chair. Due to his spinal injury, Rob uses very specific technology and therefore required additional brackets to fit & mount his various aids on to.
Rob’s Extreme X8 has a top speed of 10kph (6.2mph) while the articulated frame technology ensures all four driving wheels remain in contact with the ground as the 14” lower pressure tyres provide the necessary traction to navigate terrain that many people think is impossible in a powerchair. For example, on a recent trip to the beach with his mother, father and sister, Rob was travelling along a coastal path and came across a set of 12 steps, everyone thought they would have to turn back but the Extreme X8 tackled them with no problem and the family was able to continue their walk.
Every powerchair supplied by All Terrain Wheelchairs is bespoke and available with a comprehensive range of seating and control options to ensure there is a suitable model for anyone regardless of their level of mobility and independence.
“Cheryl, Richard and the rest of the team at All Terrain Wheelchairs have been great from day one and I would not hesitate in recommending them to anyone in a similar situation to myself who is looking to regain an active outdoor lifestyle. I certainly would not have been able to complete Tough Mudder without their support” concluded Rob.
While in hospital, Rob set up a blog to keep family and friends up-to-date on his progress. Rob has continued with this over the last three years in the hopes it can inspire other people in a similar situation to realise that they can still enjoy a fun, fulfilling life.
