5 years ago, my fellow co-founder, Tom Jannone and I got to know each other after a few shifts at a Care Home. We stopped one night in a local pub for a pint on the way home, and the conversation turned to how Tom had immersed himself in this extraordinary job. When we started to discuss how to improve Social Care, I invited Tom to co-write the book I’d already been working on for a while.
Our book “Who Cares? We Do” was published in February 2017 on Amazon.
Somebody who had been a very senior UK politician, was given my contact details by somebody who’d read the book, and this politician called me out of the blue when I was halfway through a shift. I asked permission from the person I was supporting to take this very important call, and once approved, began describing our suggestions to the former politician.
He immediately saw the value in what we were suggesting and arranged for us to meet with the Special Adviser to the Secretary of Health and the Director of Care and Transfomation Directorate at the Department of Health.
It was a day we’ll never forget – 2 ordinary Carers, struggling to make ends meet and having to borrow the train fare, talking with highly influential people on the top floor at the Department of Health, Victoria Street, London. Furthermore, they loved Tom’s Care App idea and encouraged us to turn it into a reality.
We applied to Dragon’s Den and before progressing any further, were approached by Innovate Design https://www.innovate-design.co.uk/ who have worked with the design products of successful Dragon Den’s applicants. They saw our application and offered to build our App. We went to Salisbury for the first meeting with them and DirectCareHub has never looked back since.
So what does the Care App do so differently in a nutshell? The App’s business model is a disruptor to the normal Caring Agency way of doing things. It links self-employed and experienced Carers to Care Providers, gives much greater choice for everyone and you can choose the same Carer over and over again. See how easy it is on our youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxanGxS4hYo
Experienced carers who are meet our high standards are screened by interview to see if they are caring and have the right attitude. Carers are paid regularly and both parties can access an independent mediation service.
Carers will also earn a much higher hourly rate than conventional Agency staff. See pay rates for Tier 1: https://directcarehub.co.uk/tiers.php
AND YET CARE PROVIDERS STILL MAKE BIG SAVINGS BECAUSE WE ONLY CHARGE A SMALL % SERVICE CHARGE, SO IT’S ANOTHER GREAT WAY THEY GAIN FROM USING DIRECTCAREHUB.
