Part of the Driving Mobility network, Derby DrivAbility will be holding a free Driving Assessment Open Day for healthcare professionals and the general public at it’s new premises on 22nd May 2019.
As a registered charity, Driving Mobility accredits 20 driving assessment centres covering the whole of the UK, many with outreach facilities. These centres include independent charities and NHS centres which offer professional information and assessment so disabled and elderly people can gain or retain independence. Derby DrivAbility operates within the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. Its Occupational Therapists (OTs), Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) and Administration staff offer professional driving assessments to people who need to gain, or retain, the ability to drive following a diagnosis involving impairment or disability. Service users can self-refer, or be referred by the DVLA, Motability or any health professional such as OTs, Doctors or Specialist Nurses. Derby DrivAbility’s Open Days will showcase its services and highlight the positive outcomes it achieves.
Attendees will gain valuable knowledge regarding assisted driving and wheelchair accessible vehicles either for themselves or for their clients. A range of adapted controls and equipment will be on display including left-foot accelerators, steering aids, hand controls, ring accelerators, wheelchair hoists and rotating seats. A selection of specialist manufacturers will also be demonstrating:
- Drive from wheelchair vehicles – Sirus Automotive
- Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles – Allied Mobility
- Adaptations – Des Gosling Mobility Ltd
- Car boot hoists – Autochair
Liz Whiteman, Centre Manager/Lead Clinician comments: “We welcome all local healthcare professionals and members of the general public to attend our Open Day. Our new facilities here at Derby DrivAbility are fantastic and our complete range of services will be on display. With the support of specialist manufacturers, the event promises to be an unmissable opportunity for service users, therapists, GPs and anyone with a need for greater driving independence.”
