Differentiation Through Design

Elstow Manor Care HomeIn an increasingly competitive marketplace award-winning Hamberley Care Homes has just opened Elstow Manor, a state-of-the-art bespoke care home showcasing a luxurious, welcoming environment located in Wixams, Bedfordshire.  At the forefront of this development the Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach facilitates a truly personalised programme for Elstow Manor’s residents.  In support of this key focus, interior spaces have been designed to provide maximum flexibility of use for the residential, dementia, and nursing care residents, and short break guests.

Front and Centre

The spacious Café/Bistro has elegant bespoke joinery which includes a resident coffee bar with an island which can be used for buffetsElstow Manor or cocktail events.  Research shows that blue is overwhelmingly the favourite colour of people in western cultures over 70 years of age and the joinery is the starting point for a colour scheme underpinned by its rich blue paintwork. The built-in LED lighting provides a soft glowing light rather than anything with glare which could be a concern for people with eyesight issues including macular degeneration. This guideline principle continues with level and diffused lighting throughout the facility. The chairs, supplied by Inside Out, are a custom height to make sitting and rising easier for older people and are covered with materials by Sekers and Agua fabrics to minimise cleaning.

The raised and lit ceiling coffer showcases a faux tree centrepiece.  This makes a natural meeting place while also serving as a room divider between one of the main resident lounges and the café.  The built-in surround seating adds extra cover possibilities to the café when required and when the tables are repositioned.  The tree base and branches are from a real preserved tree and silk leaves are hand installed by the supplier Bright Green for a fully realistic, maintenance-free focal point.

Front of House

In addition to spacious lounges Park Grove has designed an intimate private dining room which also doubles as a meeting and residentElstow Manor club room.  There is a dresser for storage on one wall and the panel-effect wallpaper carries the colour scheme from the bistro, so the transition between spaces feels natural.  Also on offer is a full hair salon and nail bar, an activity room, quiet lounges, as well as a showpiece cinema room.  Attending the cinema with others is an ‘event’ and the interior finishes include chairs with a lush and stain-proof fabric by Sunbury, and a dramatic theatre-style wallpaper in a striking, unusual colourway. The Spa bathroom has soft lighting and a warm and intimate ambience which would be welcome in any private residence.

Front of Mind

It is rare for any two people to have the exact same aesthetic taste, and in any residential offering the private bedroom is the centre ofElstow Manor Care Home the ‘home’ for any individual.  Park Grove Design, working collaboratively with Hamberley Development, curated unique and strong room designs which also allow for individual resident additions.  When doors are open you see great differentiation in style to suit a multitude of tastes, underpinning Hamberley’s message of personalised wellbeing.  In keeping with the requirement for a high-end aspirational look a total of seven room designs were developed by Park Grove’s Vivien Obbagy, each inspired by a fashion influence: Chanel, BIBA, Mary Quant, Ralph Lauren, Dior, Zandra Rhodes and Carnaby Street.  Quality case goods, by Renway Healthcare, compliment the finishes of the profiling beds upholstered in anti-bacterial fabrics and supplied by Innova Care Concepts.  No one has ever complained about having too little surface area next to their bed, so bedside tables have thoughtfully large tops.

Park Grove Design’s work at Hamberley’s Elstow Manor Care Home is a fine example of a flexible and personalised interior environment which reflects the company’s wellbeing and lifestyle message, differentiating the home from its competitors.
