For 2017, The Occupational Therapy Show is delighted to have Professor Michael Iwama lecture on the education programme once again! Professor Iwama is a leading theorist whose work centres on the nexus between culture, knowledge theory and practice in Occupational Therapy. He is the originator of the Kawa ‘River’ Model which is taught and practiced in occupational therapy settings around the world.

Presentation title: Like a River; The Power of Client Narrative in Occupational Therapy

Presentation synopsis: The most powerful occupational therapy aims to enable people from all walks of life, to engage and participate in activities and processes that they value. Dr Iwama will explain why client narratives of their real experiences and struggles in everyday life are essential for occupational therapy to succeed. An overview of the Kawa (River) Model is presented as an effective method to access client narratives, and in turn configure an occupational therapy that is relevant, and powerfully effective.

Presentation title: Introduction to the Kawa Model of Occupational Therapy

Presentation synopsis: The Kawa Model is the newest substantial model of occupational therapy, and the first to be constructed outside of the English Speaking world. Based on a metaphor of nature (Kawa is Japanese for ‘River’) to depict the life journey, the innovative model aims to empower the client’s narrative of their daily life experiences. Occupational therapists use the model as a guiding framework to enable the client’s daily life to flow better.
